riding the overland...from melbourne to adelaide

after only a couple weeks of the luxuries of melbourne, had we decided to go ahead and venture to queensland to try to live and work in a beach city called cairns. cairns looked amazing with endless views over the great barrier reef. so we immediately set off not really knowing what to expect. our itinerary set for us to go from melbourne to adelaide, and from adelaide to alice springs, and from alice to darwin and from darwin we would either take a plane, bus or lift to cairns. gearing up for a 3 day train ride was something that neither of us could have anticipated or prepared for. as we purchased our last minute snacks molly dropped us off at the train station early in the morning. getting to the station we quickly learned that we had to meet a 20kilo limit per check in luggage. carrie easily made the cut off, leaving me to shove socks and shoes in other bags to hopefully get everything kosher, this was another theme of the trip throughout our time in australia. the train ride from melbourne to adelaide, the overland, was surprisingly comfortable as we lucked out getting the seats in the first row which boasted extra leg room, and the ride also had extremely beautiful and hilly scenery to view on our way. we also were fortunate enough to see our first kangaroos in australia bouncing up some hills. so within about ten hours we reached adelaide. we had made arrangements to stay at a hostel called "annies" we didn't know much about it, but the fact that they had free pickups from the train station seemed like a convenient choice. getting picked up i think we were both excited and felt as if we were actually on our "own" not having the shelter and protection that simon and molly had provided our first weeks in the country. annie's wasn't the prettiest or cleanest hostel but fit the need and gave us our first opportunity to meet some really wonderful people.
